Way back in 1990, at the 20th anniversary of Earth Day, I saw Middle School students, celebrating Earth Day. I was caught up in their enthusiasm, and chose to be a part of their environmental mission. But, I also wanted to promote the most environmental processes, and not just the minimum standards to be Eco Friendly.
So, I decided to promote printing on 100% Post-Consumer Waste paper and not the minimum of 30% PCW. I was either going to be a really Green Printer, with a really Green Printing firm or not promote being Eco Friendly at all. I bought the first 100% PCW stock made, called Recycled Bond, from Domtar Paper Mill, in Canada. Back in 1990, the only two colors made were a deep gray and an Oat color. A few years later, Domtar rolled out more colors, and called their new line Sandpiper. I stocked every color they made and I promoted huge the fact that I was a big Green Printer.
Later, I started carrying what is now called Enviro from Cascades, Environment, from Neenah, Options, from Mohawk, Cambric, from Mohawk, and the Classic grades, from Neenah. I bought in bulk, and did not charge extra for small printing orders. I encouraged my clients to use the Eco Emblems, like 100% PCW and 100% PCF, and the FSC emblem, and the Soy based ink emblem and the Green E emblems, and STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD. It worked for my clients and it worked for me.
Coated papers were not the dominant papers from my Eco clients. They were ok with a flatter-looking printing job, because they could and would feature the 100% PCW/100% PCF emblem for all to see. My firm became the firm to go to for the most environmental printing jobs. I talked a few clients into doing Bookmarks, Eco Circles, Stationary, Pocket Folders, TriFold's, Brochures, Envelopes, Greeting Cards and Postcards on 100% Post-Consumer Waste Recycled Stocks, and be using Chlorine Free Paper at the same time. I was able to meet budget jobs, by switching to our 90 bright Enviro line, and be able to compete against the 30% PCW lines and the non recycled lines.
This is now almost 24 years later, and Eco Friendly Printer, aka the Greg Barber Company, is going strong. I hope you will Stand Out From The Crowd, and call or text me at 973 224 1132, or email me. You'll be glad you did.
